1888
Gold Dollar ANACS PR62CAM. A wonderful proof Cameo example
of this second to last year issue of the gold dollar
denomination. One of 1,079 proofs made for collectors,
one of the largest numbers within the whole context
of 19th century proof gold. Yet, examples are always
in demand, as proof gold coinage is commonly regarded
as prime art of American coinage.
The gold denomination hardly circulated after the
1860’s, and mintages of circulation strikes
were small. In fact, some consider the only reason
that circulation strikes were made at all to be consciousness
at the Mint. In case only proofs (such as the present
piece) were made for collectors, these would be rarities
and much in demand. Finally, after decades of mostly
low production, the denomination was discontinued
in 1889.
The present piece is a wonderful “Cameod”
piece of this issue. Certified by ANACS in new holder,
considerable black/gold contrast can be seen when
the coin is tilted. This coin is completely original,
with all details fully struck as can be expected for
a proof. A wonderful 19th century proof coin that
is available for a very reasonable price.
