1872
$2.5 Quarter Eagle NGC AU58. The Liberty quarter eagle
series, struck between 1840 and 1907 contains many sleepers.
These are coins which would be considered rare, but
are often forgotten because of many rarities elsewhere
in the series. For the series of quarter eagles struck
from 1864 to 1872 at the Philadelphia Mint. Mintage
gradually declined during these years, and only 3,000
coins were made of the 1872 issue. As such, pieces are
scarce in all grades, although the majority of available
coins appear to have survived in grades such as found
here. Yet, they are not easily found, and some searching
usually is needed to find premium quality examples.
The present offering represents such
a premium quality coin, which is also boosting with
originality. Both sides are darker toned to a rust-red,
orange color, which is a tad darker but still extremely
appealing. As usual for Philadelphia minted coins, the
strike is sharp and full luster can be found under the
toning. For the collector of a date set, or anyone perhaps
taking the daunting challenge of collecting quarter
eagles by date and mintmark, this is a perfect coin.
Even when you are not actively collecting the series,
the originality of this piece makes it worthwhile to
include in any collection.
