1911 Saint Gaudens (1911 St. Gaudens $20) PR66 NGC.
The year 1911 marked the abandonment of the experimental
"Roman Gold" method of proofing, and a return
to the 1908 matte proof process. While the process
was the same in 1911 as it was in 1908, the results
were noticeably different. While the 1908 coins have
distinctive coarse-grain, khaki-green surfaces, the
proofs from 1911 lack that depth of color and show
a finer granularity.
An even 100 proofs were struck to which Breen stated
that "probably fewer than 20 survive." It
is our belief that somewhere around 40 to 50 separate
pieces have survived today as recognizable proofs
from the original mintage.
A spectacular example, sure to please the specialist
of rare proof St Gaudens Double Eagles.
