1877-CC Double Eagle, NGC AU58 CAC. First year of issue for the type three double eagles, and struck at the always popular Carson City Mint. These double eagles show a modified obverse with the head repositioned by Chief Engraver William Barber. The most notable differences with the previous type are on the reverse. The denomination is now spelled out “TWENTY DOLLARS”, instead of “TWENTY D.” previously used. Some small differences in engraving are also noted.

After three years of large production of double eagles at the Carson City Mint, mintages decreased again. As a result, a total number of just 42,565 double eagles were struck at this western Mint. Of these, an estimated 1,200 pieces exist in all grades, but mostly in EF to lower AU. In 58, such as this piece, they are scarce and Mint State coins are very scarce to rare.

Collecting type three double eagles struck at the Carson City Mint makes for a rewarding experience. These large gold coins are always in demand, and the Carson City Mint is popular with collectors for being related to the old Wild West. As a result, high grade pieces are always in demand by both collectors and investors. The latter will seek such a coin as the present offering to get a variety of coins in his portfolio, and this is an excellent coin for that purpose.

This coin, sharply struck is totally original. Stickered by CAC for exceptional quality, only the slightest luster breaks keep this coin out of a Mint State holder. Full hair details indicate the strong strike, as does the eagle on the reverse. Satiny luster shows on the dark yellow surfaces, which look very pretty. A great coin for both the collector and investor!
