1879-CC Half Eagle NGC AU53 CAC. A slightly circulated
example of this popular Carson City half eagle. A
total of 17,281 half eagles were produced at the Mint
in Nevada during the year. Of these, approximately
225 to 275 coins are thought to be existent in all
grades, with the majority of the pieces showing wear
from circulation. Only a handful of pieces can be
considered to be uncirculated, and are virtually unobtainable.
Mintages of gold coins dropped after the amount of
gold ore deposited at the Carson City mint suddenly
decreased. With no gold to put into federal gold coins,
mintages remained low, although gold coins were still
widely need in commerce. As a result, the gold that
was deposited at the Mint was usually minted in the
smallest gold denomination made there, the half eagle.
The present piece is one of those half eagles. Slightly
circulated in the Carson City area, the present piece
is totally original. Stickered by CAC for exceptional
quality, this coin is one of the finer coins remaining
from the original mintage. Luster still shows in the
protected area’s, and the majority of the details
are still strongly visible. This is the direct result
of a very strong strike, and uncommon as such. A very
nice example of this scarce gold coin from the popular
Carson City Mint.
