J-221 1858 25C NGC PF64. R-7+ Rarest Paquet 25c. J221 1858 25c NGC PF64, R-7+. The obverse features Christian Gobrecht’s Seated Liberty design which was in wide use in 1858. The reverse was designed by Assistant Mint Engraver Anthony Paquet. Paquet, a German immigrant, is most famous for his 1861 double eagle reverse which was struck on a limited basis and is highly prized. During his tenure at the Mint he created multiple designs used on pattern coins. Among his 25c patterns, this work is his rarest.
The 25c pattern offered here is exceedingly rare with a scant 5 total pieces certified by NGC and 0 certified by PCGS. Struck on a silver planchet with a reeded edge, this PF64 example exhibits lovely blue and pastel tones with light cameo frost on the devices. This is truly an ultra rare piece of U.S. numismatic history and a unique opportunity for the collector/investor who requires only the finest pieces for his/her holdings.
