J-1601 1879 Half Dollar 50C PCGS PF64, Harry W. Bass Jr. Collection, R-6+. Nicknamed the “Miniature Morgan Dollar”, both sides of this pattern feature designs created by George T. Morgan. The obverse is identical to that used on the famous Morgan Silver Dollar. The reverse, however, is a different interpretation of an eagle than what is rendered on that coin. This particular piece once belonged in the famous Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection and is noted as such by PCGS.
This particular pattern was struck in both copper and silver. The specimen offered here is of the latter variety. A close inspection of this coin will reveal hints of iridescent orange and blue-gray tones beneath the somewhat dark patina. Of note the weakness in detail seen above Liberty’s ear is common for this issue. This is a wonderful and important piece with a famous pedigree destined to become a center piece in a high caliber collection.
