5C (J-805, high R-7) NGC PF64 BN - The regular
five-cent nickel piece of the year, but struck in copper
instead. This so-called die trail is very rare, with
approximately 5 or 6 pieces known in all grades. Most
major pattern collectors sold during the last few years
have lacked an example of this variety, indicating the
true rarity of this piece. During the last 20 years,
only 4 examples have appeared at public auction, of
which multiple were the same coin.
Die trails are patterns that were struck
on planchets of another metal than the regular issue.
Like the present example, this could be a nickel struck
in copper, or a gold piece struck in Aluminum. Although
it is possible that some were actually used as die trails,
it is more likely that these were often exclusively
made for sale to collectors. Whatever the true status
of these pieces is, all range from very scarce to unique
or nearly so, making ownership of any off-metal die
trail piece a true accomplishment.
The present piece is a darker toned
example, with some lighter area’s, struck in copper
with a plain edge. Under the toning, strong mirrors
can be seen when the coin is tilted to the light. No
distracting marks are seen on either side, with just
a few tiny spots keeping it out of a gem holder. The
overall eye-appeal is very good, and any advanced shield
nickel or pattern collector should consider this piece
for inclusion in his or her collection.
