1861 $3 Three Dollar Gold NGC XF45 CAC. With a mintage of just 5,959 the 1861 $3 gold piece is a very popular coin struck in the first year of the American Civil War. Despite its very low mintage, this issue is usually available in the circulated grades, but original pieces are few and far between. The present coin is such an original example, which would be perfect to represent this type in an advanced type set of America’s 19th century gold coinage. From the original mintage, it is estimated that perhaps 500 to 600 pieces survive in all grades. Usually, this would be considered to be a rare coin in popular series like Morgan dollars or Lincoln cents. Within the context of this unusual denomination, it is considered to be one of the most available coins in circulated grades and very scarce in uncirculated condition.
The present example is totally original and has excellent eye-appeal. It circulated for some time, perhaps as a pocket piece, as circulation of this denomination was minimal in the 19th century. Yet, some traces of luster remains visible in the protected areas, which adds to the desirability of this coin. Medium orange-gold toning is visible on the devices, with a more green-gold coloration in the protected fields. Some tiny marks are visible on both sides, but these are minimal and none are worth to be individually mentioned. Sharply impressed, nearly all details remain visible, despite the wear that is visible on both sides. Stickered by CAC for exceptional eye-appeal, this coin will appeal every conscious buyer of 19th century gold coins.
